What to Look for When Buying a Slab – A Guide for Resin Art Projects
Choosing the right slab for your resin project can be the difference between a showpiece and a struggle. Whether you're a seasoned artist or just starting out, here’s what you need to consider when shopping for a slab—especially olive root slabs.
1. Drying Quality (Kiln-Dried vs. Air-Dried)
Always opt for kiln-dried slabs. Moisture is resin’s enemy—it causes warping, cracking, and bonding issues.
> Tip: Ask your supplier about moisture content. It should be below 12%.
2. Surface Preparation
Look for slabs that are:
Sanded flat
Planed on at least one side
Free from bark (unless you want a rustic edge)
This reduces your prep time and helps the resin adhere smoothly.
3. Natural Voids & Cracks (The Good Kind!)
Especially with olive root slabs, natural cavities make perfect features for resin filling. Just make sure:
The cracks aren’t too deep or unstable
There are no signs of rot or mold inside the voids
4. Thickness & Dimensions
Ensure the slab thickness fits your intended design:
3–5 cm for tables
2 cm or less for boards, trays, and art
Cutting down a thick slab is costly—choose smart from the start.
5. Uniqueness
One of the biggest appeals of using slabs in epoxy art is the uniqueness. Look for grain movement, knots, and color variety that speak to your creative vision.
